Description
It's been a long summer for Goldy Schulz, who is engaged in planning a wedding reception for Aspen Meadow's nuttiest bridezilla. But then Doc Finn, beloved local physician and the best friend of Goldy's godfather, Jack, is killed when his car tumbles into a ravine. Jack thinks Doc was murdered because of the research he was doing at the local spa—allegations that are confirmed when Jack himself is attacked.
So Goldy adds more work to her plate and dons chef's whites to go undercover at the spa, where coffee is outlawed in favor of smoothies. But if she doesn't find the clever killer on the spa grounds who's watching her every move, catering weddings and cooking low-fat food might just be the death of Goldy Schulz . . .
And enjoy Goldy's delectable recipes, including fatally flaky cookies and nutcase cranberry-apricot bread!

Summary: "Better the second time around"
I read this book when it first came out and was slightly dissapointed. It just didn't seem to have the same quality as the other Goldy books. However I recently went through and re read all of Ms. Davidson's Goldy books and reading Fatally Flaky so close to reading the other books I liked it a lot.
Goldy Shultz, Aspen Meadow, Colorado's only caterer, has been commisioned to do the wedding for a spoiled and bratty Billie, a 36 year old who still lives with her rich and coddling mother.
After many date and venue changes Billie decides to hold her wedding at Gold Gulch spa, an expensive weight loss facility run by pompous Victor Lane. Things turn ugly when beloved Doc Finn is found murdered in a ravine. Goldy's godfather, Jack, wants to know what happened to his friend and he knows Gold Gulch Spa holds the clues. But when Jack too has been killed Goldy takes matters into her own hands to find out what exactly is going on.
Fatally Flaky, like the other books by Diane Mott Davidson is an easy and cozy read. They have a little bit of everything; deception, murder, romance, with an underlying of humor. If you didn't like this book the first time I would say to give it another chance. I'm quite glad I did and I can hardley wait for the next installment of the Goldy mysteries.

Summary: "fatally flaky"
I picked this up as a book on tape. And honestly, I would have stopped and tossed it after the first CD was complete, except I was driving a long ways and the radio wasn't cutting it. I understand this is one in a whole series, and I'm not sure how the author got published.
Book was boring; the main character is whiny, self absorbed and clueless. And for some reason all the other characters let her get away with this. The "bad" characters are all bad -- very one dimensional. I figured out the mystery probably a third of the way through the book.
So bottom line, characters are boring; the description of the food is boring. Goldy's constant moaning about how wonderful her godfather was is boring (especially since that character really came across as self absorbed as well) and the mystery was non existent.
There are too many other great mystery writers out there to waste your money on this series.

Summary: "FATALLY FLAKY goes from third gear to fifth gear in three seconds flat!"
FATALLY FLAKY is Diane Mott Davidson's 14th culinary mystery starring Aspen Meadow, Colorado's favorite caterer/sleuth, Goldy Schulz. Married to a policeman and longtime resident, Goldy uncovers many local mysteries and often faces dangerous, if not nearly deadly, situations herself. Included in the index are 10 mouthwatering recipes made with ingredients readily available in her plentiful pantry.
Aspen Meadow, Colorado is a delightful mountain town west of Denver. Here Goldy owns and manages a catering company. In the last few years she has seen steady growth in her business as residents use her catering for all special occasions, meetings, events and weddings. In FATALLY FLAKY, Goldy works with her talented assistant chef Julian preparing for the wedding from hell. Bridezilla returns! "Weddings are like olives. They can be the pits." Julian, the vegetarian chef Goldy trained years ago, assists her with larger gatherings.
To make matters worse, there is a murderer on the loose who recently killed Goldy's godfather's friend, drinking buddy and fellow fisherman, Dr. Finn. That will not be the last murder or attempted murder we will see.
Having read all of Davidson's books, I admit to two favorite recurring themes: Goldy loves her espresso, and she has an incredible walk-in refrigerator/freezer that houses every fresh and frozen ingredient known to man or chef. In FATALLY FLAKY, Goldy invents an iced espresso with whipping cream over ice. Using four shots of espresso in every drink, it is no wonder she is usually "buzzed." This is how she starts every day. Coeur a la crème, Cuban bread, Fatally Flaky cookies with vanilla butter cream frosting, and black-and-white cake are just a few of the recipes found in the index.
There is one spot in Aspen Meadow where you wouldn't normally find the cookery of Goldy Schulz: Gold Gulch Spa. It is a local resort for women hoping to lose weight and pamper themselves for a few days. Their smoothies are famous and addictive. There is just one thing that seems unusual: everyone who leaves after a few days suddenly wants to return. Often they need to seek medical attention. It is not necessarily healthy to hang around Gold Gulch Spa. Worse, their owner/manager, Victor, makes life very difficult for Goldy. Why does he see her as such a threat? What might he be hiding in the Smoothie Cabin, where secrets abound?
Sometimes in a mystery novel, the reader finds that the characters have previous relationships with one another. These can certainly spice up a story, as in this case. Late in the book, Davidson unveils the relationship among several central characters. All of a sudden, FATALLY FLAKY goes from third gear to fifth gear in three seconds flat! Everything suddenly makes sense. The loose ends are tied up neatly in little bows. All in all, this is a deliciously presented slice of mystery, without the accompanying calories.
